Evaluation & Next Steps
Evaluation
The demand for psychosocial interventions is high and widespread. Closing the mental health treatment gap requires collaboration between government, NGOs, and private institutions. In Dar-es-Salaam, many clients experience severe depression, stress, and suicidal thoughts, often linked to economic, family, grief, health, academic, and societal issues. Most cannot afford specialist referrals due to lack of insurance and finances, making free community services a more impactful solution.
Next Steps
By December 2030, TEWWY aims to integrate and scale evidence-based psychosocial interventions nationwide. We are collaborating with schools, LGAs, PHIs, public sectors, and grassroots organizations to embed mental health care into their services. Our plans include:
-
Training
Training 1,000 elderly women in WHO's mental health Gap Action Program (mhGAP) across urban and rural Tanzania.
-
Integration
Integrating mental health care into 3,956 wards and 25 peer-led grassroots organizations.
-
Education
Training 1,000 teachers in WHO's School Mental Health Program (SMHP) and developing a mental health literacy curriculum for 25 secondary schools.
-
Advocacy
Advocating for the decriminalization of suicide attempts and policy changes to integrate mental health care into community and social services.
