
School Initiatives
Our initiatives in mental health literacy and support have made a significant impact in Tanzanian schools. From piloting programs and developing tailored curricula to training educators and fostering peer support, we are dedicated to creating a positive and supportive environment for students’ mental well-being.
Relevant Achievements
Piloted the School Mental Health Literacy Program in 1 secondary school in Dar es Salaam, reaching over 1,280 students.
Developed and integrated a preliminary mental health literacy curriculum, adopted from WHO's School Mental Health Program (SMHP) and the African School Mental Health Curriculum (2013) and tailored to the Tanzanian context, in collaboration with local education authorities.
Trained 40 teachers and 14 student leaders, enhancing their capacity to support student and peer mental health.
Established a unique mentorship program connecting 5 psychology students from the University of Dar es Salaam with 84 students (Mashujaa secondary school wellness club members), facilitated by TEWWY.
Reduced reported incidents of physical punishment in pilot schools, indicating a shift towards more positive disciplinary practices.
Decreased self-reported substance use among students in pilot school, coupled with improved identification of at-risk students and suppliers.
Increased help-seeking behavior among students, as measured by voluntary visits to school and community counseling services.
Achieved a 500% increase in student participation in peer-led wellness clubs, growing from 14 to 84 active members across the pilot school.
